What's In It For Me?
Written by: Neha Pandya of Team Pandya..

We are hearing a lot about social media such as Facebook and LinkedIn in recent years.  Many people are using Facebook to share pictures and to stay connected with friends and family.  What if you want to stay connected with other professionals?   It states in the LinkedIn website that “LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional network with over 55 million members and growing rapidly. LinkedIn connects you to your trusted contacts and helps you exchange knowledge, ideas, and opportunities with a broader network of professionals.

Create your professional profile

Once I create an account, upload a photo and include a bio, I have an online profile for others to view with my own separate LinkedIn Website..  I tell people I meet that I have a LinkedIn profile and to go ahead and Google my full name.  My LinkedIn profile is always on the front page of the search engine. I still have the ability to reference my business website but now I quickly have a professional website which I can customize.

Staying Connected

Gone are the days where employees stay with their companies until retirement.  Intoday’sprofessional world, peopleare constantly on the move. Using LinkedIn allows the user to update their profile as the need arises.  This enables all the contacts to see an updated current profile.

Share Knowledge

The benefits of LinkedIn will come once you decide to give rather than receive.

Remember, givers always get.

It is a great networking tool that serves every industry and profession.  The site allows members to ask questions or answer questions others may have.  The best way for me to describe communicating in LinkedIn is participating in a conference call.  Everyone on the call is able to listen and communicate with each other and help each other out.  Give your knowledge and your expertise with no strings attached.  You will benefit by having your questions answered by other professionals.  You can have an income tax, legal, financial, software, and other questions answered without booking an appointment to see a professional.  There is a tool on LinkedIn called “Answers” and “Groups”.   For example, I am a member on LinkedIn with the International Toastmasters Group.  When I ask a question relating to writing or delivering a speech, I have thousands of members that are more than willing to lend a hand and give advice.

How powerful is that?

Explore opportunities

Whenever I talk about the benefits of LinkedIn, the first question is always why would I want to join?  What’s in it for me?

Perhaps this is the one of the most powerful and compelling reasons for joining LinkedIn.

This is what LinkedIn had to say.  “Whether you’re looking for a career opportunity, winning new clients or building your professional reputation, LinkedIn connects you to jobs, sales leads and ideal business partners. With our powerful search engine, company research tools and a jobs board that shows who you know at listed companies, LinkedIn is the place to turn for new opportunities.”

When looking for a job or looking to hire someone, LinkedIn is an excellent tool to use.  Members have their bio, resume, contact information, business offers they may be interested in and so much more.  Once  you create a LinkedIn account and profile, LinkedIn will allow you to search for people you may know.  But do you want to know the most powerful aspect of LinkedIn?  Once you connect with someone on LinkedIn, you will have access to people they know and in turn the people they know.  You can see how your network can explode.

Recommendations

People like to do business with people they trust and respect.  If you have done business with someone that you were quite happy with, why not recommend them on Linked In?  This enables others on your LinkedIn to feel comfortable enough to hire that individual.  This helps the person you did business with receive more business.   The giver of the business that hired the individual is also thankful because they did not have do a lot of legwork.  Now, if the person you did business with does not have a LinkedIn account, you have just given them a good reason to start one.

So, why aren’t more professionals using LinkedIn?  Perhaps they don’t see the whole picture.

Just Google “LinkedIn” and learn more on how to set up an account.  The best way to learn anything is by doing.

Well, what are you waiting for? Start a linked in account and let’s get connected.
