After 20 years of consulting it never ceases to amaze my colleagues and I how much time and effort is spent today in doing the wrong thing very well at the wrong time. When fewer resources applied in the right way at the right time will consistently yield exceptional results.

Frequently we are informed by companies that they use the "Keep It Simple Silly" (Kiss) philosophy in everything that they do. And yet they are not realizing the anticipated performance. We have seen many companies and departments dedicatedly adhere to this concept but still remain unsatisfied with the results.

As Lean Enterprise professionals we greatly admire the Kiss concept. Let's look at what the Kiss concept really means and where it can be improved to consistently deliver exceptional results.

  • Keep – Maintain, consistent, standardize;
  • It - the process, procedure, methodology in question;
  • Simple – Easy to teach, learn, apply and use. Reduce complications and complexity;
  • Silly – a gentle reminder to stick with the process.

Too many companies spend the majority of their resources the Keeping part which frequently assumes that the It was Simple in the first place. We work with our clients using the:

  • Make – making sure that the respective process is correct, current and in its simplest form;
  • It - the process, procedure, methodology in question;
  • Simple – Easy to teach, learn, apply and use. Reduce complications and complexity;
  • Silly – a gentle reminder to stick with the process.

This "Make It Simple Silly" (Miss) before "Keep It Simple Silly” (Kiss) practice directly results in first making sure that the respective process is correct, current and in its simplest form. Often some processes etc. can be eliminated or amalgamated with others that then have a far greater impact. Then "Keep It Simple Silly” (Kiss) will deliver anticipated results or performance.

Always remember to “Make It Simple Silly” (Miss) before “Keep It Simple Silly” (Kiss) and you and your people will achieve significant results.
